Zerafite sits at the intersection of American dermatology and Korean skincare science. The line was created for Dr. Leslie Baumann, a board-certified cosmetic dermatologist in Miami, by Dr. Jong-Kyung Youm, a leading skin barrier scientist in South Korea. The formulas draw on advanced K-beauty lipid technology, and are produced in Korea to Korean manufacturing standards.

Maltese Cross Technology is an advanced lipid system developed by our Korean formulator, Dr. Jong-Kyung Youm. Named for the cross-shaped pattern the lipid structures form under a microscope, it mimics the natural arrangement of lipids found in healthy skin. This helps reinforce the skin barrier and support hydration so you experience less recurring dryness over time.

As a moisturizer, Zerafite goes on after water-based serums and treatments but before SPF in your morning routine. At night, apply it as the final step after any actives (retinoids, vitamin C, acids). If you're using it over a skin-lightening serum for dark spots, apply the serum first and let it absorb, then apply your Barrier Cream on top.

All Zerafite creams are noncomedogenic, meaning none will clog your pores. For acne-prone skin under 30, we recommend Soothing & Calming. If you're over 30 or want anti-aging benefits alongside acne support, Wrinkle Defense is the better choice.

The original Zerafite products — Soothing & Calming and Barrier Repair — use MLE technology, which uses lipids that closely mimic the skin's natural barrier. These lipids naturally have an unpleasant odor, so a mild, non-sensitizing fragrance is used to mask it. The newer products use different ingredients which achieves similar barrier-repairing benefits without any associated odor — so no added fragrance is needed. Both have the same barrier complex that make them amazing fits for those with dry skin.

All Zerafite products are free from retinoids and hydroxy acids, and the fragrance-free options avoid common sensitizers. That said, we always recommend consulting your OB or dermatologist before adding any new skincare product during pregnancy or while breastfeeding, as individual circumstances vary.

The scientific word for cacti, or any plant that has adapted to survive with little water, is "xerophyte." Zerafite is a play on this word, because Zerafite products are designed to mimic the skin's natural barrier to lock in moisture to stop recurring dryness at the source. Zerafite was developed by Dr. Jong-Kyung Youm, a skin barrier scientist in South Korea, for Dr. Leslie Baumann MD — a board-certified cosmetic dermatologist with very dry, sensitive skin who reacts to most conventional moisturizers. Dr. Baumann loved the formula so much that she began introducing it to other dermatologists. Many loved it just as much as her and started asking to carry it in their practices. Zerafite was sold exclusively through dermatologist offices for over a decade before becoming available direct to consumers.
